Full course description:
Universal Voice The Science is an advanced two-day course for singing teachers, speech and language therapists and voice professionals who want to develop a deeper understanding of how the voice works.
The course combines current evidence-based knowledge of voice science, acoustics and vocal anatomy with practical applications for everyday professional practice.
During The Science, current developments in voice research are translated into clear and usable concepts. You will develop a deeper understanding of the anatomical and physiological processes involved in voice production.
The acoustics component goes beyond theory. It also develops your listening and analytical skills. You will learn to recognise frequencies, formants and harmonics and connect them to specific vocal qualities, behaviours and challenges.
Mixed voice is explored from both an anatomical and a functional acoustic perspective. You will examine the muscular coordination and acoustic principles involved in producing different qualities of mixed voice, giving you the tools to apply this knowledge in your own singing, teaching or clinical practice.
You will also receive extensive training in SOVT techniques (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract exercises). We explore the scientific principles behind SOVT, as well as practical applications and indications. You will learn which tools, such as the Universal Voice Straw or Mask, can be used in different situations, why they work and how to use them effectively for different vocal goals and challenges.
A central principle of The Science is the continuous connection between current voice research and practical teaching. The course content is regularly updated to reflect new research and developments within the field, helping you work with relevant and evidence-based knowledge.
The course is strongly practice-oriented. Alongside in-depth theory, you will work with advanced voice-analysis tools such as Voce Vista, explore practical interventions and exercises, and have the opportunity to discuss real-life cases and your own professional questions.
The Science is designed as advanced professional development for singing teachers, speech and language therapists, vocal coaches and other voice professionals who want to better understand not only what works, but also how and why it works.
The course is open to conservatory-trained singers, speech and language therapists, and CVT or EVT teachers who want to deepen their knowledge of voice production. Participants who have completed Universal Voice The System are also very welcome.
Please note: this course is taught in Dutch.
Deepen your expertise, work with current evidence-based insights and strengthen the scientific foundation of your professional voice practice with Universal Voice The Science.

WHAT IS THE GOAL?
Your personal vocal goal is central. We therefore start the course by creating your Personal Voice Plan (PVP). This shows how you can improve and develop yourself towards optimal sound. Through the Personal Voice Plan you learn to make analyses so that you can guide yourself in the future, or apply this knowledge when giving singing lessons.
With a free three-month trial on the Universal Voice App, we give you a list of exercises that you can continue doing after the course to keep using your Personal Voice Plans. With the push of a button you can study anywhere, ideal for you or your singing students.
We teach you to
- expand your range
- Have more control over how loud you sing
- Sing without audible air, or with audible air
- A good vibrato
- A freer sound
- More sharpness/metallic quality/projection, or more warmth/darkness to learn to control your tone color
- Sing orally and nasally
- Create effects
GOING DEEPER INTO THE MATERIAL
In the level 2 course you become not only a better vocalist but also a better pedagogue with more knowledge and understanding. Simple, clear and better singing but also better explaining. For this we will link the acoustics and anatomy of singing to the simple translation in the Universal Voice System during these two days.
Singing is a collaboration between countless small muscles, causing many complicated acoustic phenomena to take place. This is complex material, but when you learn to frame and apply this material through the 8 Sound Characteristics and the 4 Pillars, you have useful knowledge as a singer and pedagogue to better guide yourself and others.
- You learn to analyze sound from a spectrogram, showing us that the 8 Sound Characteristics from our system are the only things we can actually measure in sound.
- You learn to link the anatomy of the voice to the 8 Sound Characteristics and 4 Pillars. Which parts in the 4 Pillars can you adjust? Which muscles do this? And what does this produce in terms of sound? This way you learn to better understand which exercise you or your student/patient needs to develop a certain sound.
- We challenge you to get the maximum out of your voice in each of the 4 Voice Characters. You learn to sing as high, low, loud, soft as possible within each song. This gives you as much musical range of movement as possible.
- Finally, we go through all rock effects with exercises, amazing (High Speed) camera footage and sound examples that show you that you can learn it safely.
In short, the ideal day for a singer who really wants more knowledge about how singing actually works.
