How Does it Work?
Freer singing through back pressure (Inertia):
When you make sound through a Straw or Mask, the airflow encounters resistance at the narrow opening at the end. This resistance sends part of the acoustic energy back toward the vocal folds (a phenomenon known as back pressure or supraglottal pressure).
This back pressure helps the vocal folds vibrate more efficiently and with less effort, leading to more balanced and coordinated vibration of the vocal folds.
A richer sound through vocal fold efficiency!
The gentle resistance encourages the vocal folds to come together in a healthier way (adduction). This reduces excessive tension and collision force between the folds, which can help prevent vocal fatigue or damage. They touch each other more efficiently, so energy is less converted into friction, but into acoustic energy, giving you a richer sound.
Improved Resonance and tone color:
You sing with a sharper sound that carries further. You extend the vocal tract and change the shape of the resonance space. This improves acoustic tuning (especially formant tuning) and helps singers find a more resonant and rich sound, often referred to as the “buzz”, “ring” or “singer’s formant”.
Smooth sound onset and transitions:
Because it promotes gentle and efficient phonation, it helps improve sound onset (how you start a sound) and smooths transitions between registers (for example from chest to head voice).
What is the difference between the Universal Voice. Straw and
the Universal Voice. Mask?
Universal Voice. Straw:
The straw has the advantage of being made of metal, which doesn’t bend at all, and thus continues to provide the ideal back pressure. This brings the vocal cords and your resonance space into the perfect state to let your voice create a rich sound with as little resistance as possible. Because your lips are completely around the straw, no air or sound can escape anywhere and during singing in the straw, back pressure is ideal for free yet resonant singing. The challenge lies in learning to make the same sound on vowels or lyrics of a song after you remove the straw. The more you have to sing on open vowels like A, È, Ò, the more difficult the transition. The more you sing on closed vowels like OE, U, IE, the easier it becomes.
Universal Voice. Mask
The UV mask has the advantage that you can put the mask completely over your nose and mouth, allowing you to practice on song lyrics. This way you can learn to sing your favorite songs with back pressure. What’s special is that this works for all music styles, from classical to pop/rock. It is important that you press the mask firmly against your face, so that air doesn’t escape along the sides.

Both have the same function, but one is somewhat more precise in practice, the other has a more practical application towards practicing a song.

Met het UVS masker voelde en hoorde ik al snel resultaten. Mijn klank werd helderder en draagkrachtiger. Werkt ongeveer hetzelfde als de straw, maar dan met het voordeel dat je makkelijker de overstap kan zetten naar zingen op tekst!
