Alberto ter Doest studied at the Twente Conservatory (now ArtEZ Conservatory Enschede) and at the Sweelinck Conservatory (now Conservatory of Amsterdam). After his studies, he frequently performed as a soloist in oratorios and operas. He also sang in musicals such as Les Misérables, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera, and Closer than Ever. He worked in Vienna, on the West End in London, and in many theaters in the Netherlands. He also participated in major dinner shows and many large international events. Alberto was also co-founder and cast member of “Forbidden Musicals”, the annual parody show with a playful nod to the Dutch musical scene.
Voice Coach, Vocal Coach
Alberto ter Doest has been a well-known and respected voice coach both nationally and internationally for years. He has worked as a vocal coach for major musicals and shows such as Miss Saigon, Rent, Joe, Little Shop of Horrors, Aida, A Chorus Line, and Copacabana. He is also a guest lecturer at the Performers School for Drama and Dance in London and The Shanghai Theatre Academy in Shanghai. Until 2014, he was Principal Voice Teacher at Codarts Conservatory Rotterdam. His alumni are successful worldwide.
Voice Training
After working with Jo Estill (Estill Voice System), he became the first official Certified Course Instructor in the Netherlands. Inspired by Jo Estill, he has conducted countless studies on how the voice works. The highlight was a study in Padua where various needles were inserted into neck muscles to demonstrate muscle function for different vocal characteristics. All his practical and research knowledge is compiled in the Universal Voice Guide, also known as the voice bible. Based on this knowledge, he teaches a range of voice technique workshops and courses in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, and China.
On Stage
What makes Alberto ter Doest so unique? Besides being a successful voice coach/voice pedagogue, he still has both feet firmly planted in the singing profession. Alberto has been a member of the Netherlands Chamber Choir for almost 27 years. With this professional choir, he performs concerts around the world and works with the best and greatest conductors in the world.
